A planetary gearbox, also called an epicyclic gearbox, is a coaxial mechanical transmission in which several planet gears orbit around a central sun gear, enclosed in an internal ring gear.
This architecture distributes torque across multiple simultaneous contact points, delivering high power density, compact footprint and exceptional reliability even under severe loads.
The four components
Sun gear: at the centre of the gearbox, receives motion from the input shaft.
Planet gears: typically 3 gears rotating around the sun gear, sharing the load over multiple contact points.
Ring gear: an internally toothed gear, in most applications fixed to the housing.
Planet carrier: the structure that supports the planet gears and transmits torque to the output shaft.
Distributing the load across multiple planet gears is the reason planetary gearboxes can transmit high torque within compact volumes: a decisive feature when designing mobile machinery, slewing arms or wheel-integrated drives.

Haumea's modular epicyclic reducers are the core of the PLANETARY DRIVES product line and come in two complementary series: PGA and PG Series. Both share the same modular architecture — 21 base sizes, output torque from 0.05 to 65 kNm (37 to 47,950 lb·ft), single-stage ratios from 3.55:1 to 7:1 and multi-stage configurations exceeding 10,000:1 — and differ in geometry and coupling configurations suited to specific application contexts.
The modular architecture allows both series to couple the epicyclic base with multi-disc hydraulic brakes and a wide range of hydraulic motors (axial piston or orbital) and electric motors.
PGA
The PGA series of modular epicyclic reducers. 21 base sizes, output torque from 0.05 to 65 kNm, modular ratios up to over 10,000:1. Couples with hydraulic and electric motors, bevel gears, worm gears and hydraulic brakes. Technical catalogues and dimensional sheets available as PDF.
The PG Series of modular epicyclic reducers. 21 base sizes, output torque from 0.05 to 65 kNm, configurable in up to 5 stages. Same modular architecture and same coupling options as the PGA series, with geometry adapted to different application contexts. PDF catalogues available for each size.
For a side-by-side comparison and access to technical catalogues for both series, visit the Modular epicyclic reducers page.

The Haumea range is designed to operate in heavy-duty industrial environments. PGA and PG Series epicyclic reducers are used daily across many sectors. To filter configurations by product line and application sector, visit the Applications page.
Selecting the right planetary gearbox means gathering five key pieces of information about your application. These are the same questions our engineering office asks during the quotation phase: having them clear up front speeds up the response and reduces sizing errors.
Calculate the required torque
Start from the application load and calculate the nominal torque and peak torque at the output, applying the service factor appropriate to your duty cycle (continuous, intermittent, with shock). Peak torque drives the selection of the PG size.
Define the reduction ratio
Divide the motor nominal speed by the required output shaft speed. High ratios (>100:1) require multi-stage configurations: Haumea's modularity covers up to 5 stages, exceeding 10,000:1 when needed.
Check the available envelope
Measure the axial and radial space available on the machine. The coaxial configuration of epicyclic reducers is their strength: it allows transmitting high torque in compact volumes compared to parallel-shaft transmissions.
Choose the motor coupling type
Define whether the motor will be hydraulic (piston or orbital) or electric (IEC, custom), which flange is required and whether you need a solid input shaft or an adapter. This determines the selection of the modular input flange.
Consider the operating environment
Operating temperature, humidity, dust, splashes, chemical agents and required IP rating drive the choice of seals, lubricants, paint cycles and accessories (sensors, guards, brakes). Marine, mining or food-grade environments require specific configurations.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a planetary gearbox and an epicyclic gearbox?
The two terms refer to the same product. "Epicyclic gearbox" is the engineering-technical name, while "planetary gearbox" is the more common commercial designation, derived from the motion of the planet gears orbiting around the central sun gear, similarly to planets around the sun.
What torque levels do Haumea planetary gearboxes reach?
The PGA and PG Series cover output torque from 0.05 kNm to 65 kNm (37 to 47,950 lb·ft), spread over 21 base sizes. The size is selected based on the peak torque and the service factor of the application.
Planetary gearbox or parallel-shaft gearbox: which is better?
The planetary gearbox is the preferred choice when high torque in compact volumes, coaxial input-output configuration and high reliability under pulsating loads are required. Parallel-shaft gearboxes (in-line or orthogonal) are competitive at low ratios and constant-load applications, but require a larger envelope for the same torque.
Can I order a custom planetary gearbox?
Yes. The modular architecture allows configuration of reduction ratios, flanges, output shafts and couplings to hydraulic or electric motors, as well as hydraulic brakes. For non-standard requirements, our engineering office develops dedicated solutions.
What reduction ratios are available?
Single-stage gearboxes offer ratios from 3.55:1 to 7:1. The multi-stage configuration of up to 5 stages reaches ratios above 10,000:1, with great flexibility to match the gearbox to the torque and speed curve required by the application.
What lubricant do Haumea planetary gearboxes use?
The type of lubricant (mineral or synthetic oil, viscosity, EP additives) is chosen based on transmitted torque, speed, operating temperature and environment. Specific instructions are provided in the manual accompanying each gearbox and are agreed with the engineering office during the quotation phase.
How long does it take to ship a Haumea planetary gearbox?
Thanks to the just-in-time component warehouse, standard shipping is 24/48 hours from order, testing included. Configurations made to drawing require a lead time agreed at the design stage.
